Most of us are not aware of the diverse benefits of the advantageous local herb called scent leaf which is being referred to as efinrin in Yoruba, nchanwu leaf in Igbo and daidoya leaf in Hausa. 

The botanical name of this magical herb is Ocimum gratissimum which belongs to the family of Labiatae.

Benefits of scent Leave

1:The shrub is a spicy ingredient to some Nigerian or even African families. The scent leave which has been reported to be rich in plant chemical. The oil from the leave is used to produce antiseptics and some antibacterial substances.


2:Scents leave helps in digestion and respiration. The scent of the leave possesses a menthol which can be used in pharmaceutical preparations as an antitussive. The scent is said to be a relief or even cure to nostril pain.


3:Scent leave can be used to cure oral infections, this works as a menthol for preventing mouth odour.


4:If boiled, it can be used to treat cancer, hypertension and even stroke. It is a life sustainer.


5:Scent leave can be used to preserve food, due to its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.


6:If dry, the leave can serve as a mosquito repellent.


7:The stick of the leaf can be chewed, it helps in the sparkling of teeth.
